Matt Prior, the England wicketkeeper, has said the side can hit back in the second Test in Mohali despite a "hugely deflating" defeat in Chennai. Prior felt England could take a huge amount from the first Test and turn it into the confidence needed to level the series - much like in 2006, when they won the final Test in Mumbai.
"We had put ourselves in a really good position and when you are going for the win you have the excitement [of knowing] that you can do it," said Prior in Mohali. "When you don't come out on the right side it's almost doubly disappointing. But the games come thick and fast so you dust yourselves down and crack on.
"To get so close was a great effort. Yes, we would have wanted to win obviously but I think we take a huge amount from that last Test match and we come to Mohali very confident as a unit that we can level the series.
"It was very warm and very humid and to play a full five days of intense Test cricket and then to come out the wrong side at the end of it is hugely deflating," he said. "It was a pretty quiet changing room at the end of it, but there were a huge amount of positives to come out of that whole Test match."
Monty Panesar has drawn flak for a poor outing in Chennai - he went wicketless in India's successful chase - but Prior said the left-arm spinner would come back hard. "I think Monty will admit he can probably bowl better, but he was bowling at some fantastic players of spin," said Prior. "Monty is still learning his trade and we have no doubt what a fantastic bowler he is, and we support him wholeheartedly. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before he wins those games for England, like he has before."

New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram was Tuesday ruled out for the second Test against the West Indies due to a lingering calf strain. The injury-prone Oram was a late withdrawal for the first drawn Test and he will now prepare for the Twenty/20 games and five one-day internationals to be played after the second Test, the New Zealand team management said. Discarded fast bowler Chris Martin will be brought in as cover for all-rounder James Franklin, who suffered a heavy knock to his ribs while batting in the rain-disrupted first Test in Dunedin. Batsman Peter Fulton, dropped after New Zealand were thrashed in the two Test series in Australia last month, has also been brought into the squad as cover for Ross Taylor, who dislocated a finger when he dropped a catch in the Dunedin Test.

Neil McKenzie was the only loss for a cautious South Africa before lunch as they posted 1 for 27 in reply to Australia's first innings of 375. The captain Graeme Smith appeared comfortable during the 15 overs before the break and had 12 while Hashim Amla was 6.
McKenzie carried a defensive outlook, preferring to leave or block, but after spending 30 balls over 2 he made a poor choice to the next delivery and attempted to pull Mitchell Johnson. The offering was short and wide outside off stump - more suited to a cut - and McKenzie was not helped by a lack of back-foot movement. He could not believe his decision and watched the ball loop to Jason Krejza at mid-off.
Johnson's first spell included a handful of balls a long way outside off stump and he returned 1 for 13. Brett Lee was operating above 140kph and keeping a tight line, giving away five runs in as many overs. The offspinner Krejza was brought on and had a strong lbw appeal turned down against Smith, who was pushing forward, while Peter Siddle was also called briefly without success.
